On Friday afternoon, the District 7 Regional Dive and Communication Teams were dispatched to Dorothy Pond in Millbury for reports of a missing boater.

A 9-1-1 caller reported 2 people in a kayak, with one that dove into the water and never came back up.  The second person was making several attempts to go under the water to try to find him.

The first responding police officers arrived and entered the water in an attempt to locate the man, with assistance from firefighters.  An underwater camera was set up, but due to the murky waters, visibility was low and the camera was not very helpful.

The kayaker that was attempting a rescue before first responders arrived began to have seizures and had to be rushed to the hospital by ambulance.

The missing kayaker’s body was located at 3:39 pm out 110 feet away from shore.  He could not be saved.  It is believed he was trying to retrieve a tackle box that was in the water and never resurfaced.

In a message on Facebook, Millbury Police posted, “Amazing effort by all involved.. We wish the outcome would have been different.”

The Millbury Fire Department thanked the many Police Officers, Firefighters, Paramedics, EMTs and the many area residents that assisted in the search.

The medical examiner arrived to transport the victim and Environmental Police, the District Attorney’s Office and Millbury Police are investigating.
