If you’ve been following our website in the recent months, you have seen quite a few fires reported on, many of them in Oxford.  We have gotten several questions and comments both on social media and on our website wondering why there are so many fires in that town lately. Webster Police and EMS are on the scene of a multi-vehicle accident on Main Street in Webster.  The entire street was closed in the area of Subway and the Rob Roy Hair Salon as of 4:45PM on Wednesday, May 16th.  Drivers were asked to find an alternate route. At least 3 vehicles were involved, and THE LAKE 940 has learned at least a few minor injuries were suffered. On Wednesday morning just after 9:30, a 9-1-1 call was received by a couple who were in distress on Webster Lake. The pair reported that their sailboat had capsized while out on Middle Pond.  Webster Fire, Webster EMS and Webster Police were dispatched to respond. This call for help marked this season’s first response for Webster Police’s Boat Marine 1, Captained by Detective Christopher Trainor with the assistance of First Mate, Webster EMS Chief Gary Milliard and Second Mate, Lieutenant Tobby Wheeler. The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch for the immediate Webster area, including as far north to Worcester, Fitchburg and as far south as Putnam and Willimantic.  It does not include Rhode Island at this time.  The rest of the area is in a Severe Thunderstorm Watch. It will stay in effect until 9PM on Tuesday, May 15th.  Watch out for dark, rotating clouds.  If you see one, take shelter immediately! Knowing the difference between a watch and a warning is important. Watches are issued by by local offices of the National Weather Service, when conditions are favorable, for either for a severe thunderstorm or tornadoes.  It doesn’t necessarily mean severe weather is imminent. In what seems like a weekly occurrence, fire crews from Oxford are were called to another substantial structure fire in town.  On Monday afternoon, just after 4:30PM it was a 2 alarm blaze located at numbers 3, 5, 7 and 9 Wells Street. The building is a large 6,000 square feet structure that houses 4 families in separate townhouses with 12 total bedrooms.  The Red Cross has been asked to assist 9 adults and 5 children displaced by the fire. The Oxford Police Department has announced the arrest of a burglary suspect after many residents reported their vehicles had been broken into. Police say they have recovered many of the stolen items, if your vehicle was broken into recently between the Webster town line or anywhere near Main Street you are asked to call Officer Bryn at (508) 987-0156 regarding case 18-170-AR.
