On Friday, March 23rd, just before 2PM, Connecticut State Police Troop D and Detectives assigned to the Eastern Connecticut Major Crime Squad responded to Hometown Bank located on Route 171 in Woodstock for a reported bank robbery in progress. The suspect, a white male, approximately 5’8″to 5’10” in height, wearing a red hat with a black bandana over his face, a black coat, white shirt and blue jeans fled the area prior to Troopers arrival. The suspect fled in a tan four door vehicle, possibly a Buick, northbound on Route 169.  Troopers were able to obtain several photographs of the suspect and his vehicle from bank surveillance cameras. A “team effort” by Troopers of Connecticut State Police’s Troop D let to the arrest of 33 year old Sean Holmes of Thurber Road in Putnam. Holmes turned himself into police on Friday, March 23rd, after 4 warrants for his arrest were issued after several area robberies last Fall. In October 2017, police investigated four nighttime burglaries from  Thompson and Putnam area businesses, including at Harvest Moon on Liberty Highway in Putnam, Quaddick Country Store on Quaddick Town Farm Road in Thompson, Marika’s Restaurant and Big Gary’s Discount Liquors on Providence Pike in Putnam. Holmes was charged with several counts of larceny, criminal mischief, criminal trespass and burglary.  He was held on a combined bond…

There are still very few details of a serious multi-car crash that occurred just before 10PM on Thursday night, March 22nd on Granite Street in Webster. A vehicle, traveling well above the speed limit, crashed into several parked vehicles.  We have learned the 2 occupants of the car fled the area on foot. Witnesses we spoke to say, the driver, who possibly broke his leg in the crash, fled the area on foot.  After he was located by police he was transported to a local hospital for treatment.  We do not have any information on the second occupant of the vehicle. On Friday night around 10PM, Connecticut State Police from Troop D were on patrol of businesses in the Thompson and Putnam areas. Troopers spotted a suspicious vehicle parked in the lot of the Putnam Walmart.  Upon approaching the vehicle, the license plate reader alerted police to the vehicle being stolen from Shrewsbury. The operator, Gagandeep Kaur, was taken into custody and charged with larceny in the first degree.  She was released on a $10,000 bond.

The Bartlett High School Art Department is hosting their second annual “Empty Bowls” charity night to raise money for the Webster/Dudley Food Share.  The event will take place on Friday, April 6th from 6 to 8PM in the cafeteria of the high school. Empty Bowls is a grassroots movement to help end hunger, with the idea of enjoying a meal served in locally made pottery.  The family-friendly event will allow diners to choose a handmade ceramic bowl, made by Bartlett art students, and taste samples of entrees, soups, breads and desserts served from local area restaurants. Joseph Kenadek was indicted on Friday, March 23rd by a Worcester County Grand Jury for 2nd degree murder in the death of his girlfriend in Webster in last April, according to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early, Jr. 43 year old Brenda Hatheway of Webster was found unresponsive in the street near her home on the morning of April 30, 2017.  She died a short time later at Hubbard Regional Hospital. 52 year old Joseph Kenadek, initially had been charged with aggravated assault and battery and domestic assault and battery in Dudley District Court, but the investigation showed that he and Hatheway were involved in a loud argument that spilled over to a porch and…

A fire was reported inside the Shields Packaging Company, located at 50 Oxford Avenue in Dudley, on Friday morning.  Crews from Dudley, Webster and Oxford were dispatched just after 8AM.  At least 1 person was transported to UMASS Medical Center suffering from burns.  His condition is currently not known.  The fire was extinguished quickly by employees before firefighters arrived. In 2016 another worker was injured at the same packaging plant when an aerosol container exploded.  OSHA records show that the company was fined over $300,000 in recent years. The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles will temporarily close all branches on Friday, March 23rd and re-open on Monday March 26th while they upgrade to a new computer system. Online services will also be unavailable from 7 PM on Thursday, March 22nd, until 8 AM Monday, March 26.  There will be no motor vehicle inspections, in-person services at registry and AAA locations during this time. The new computer system will replace the current one, which has been in place for over 30 years.  It will also allow the registry to issue the new federally mandated REAL ID, which will allow some residents to use a driver’s license as federal identification.
