On Wednesday January 31st around 7:30PM, Detectives from the Southbridge Police Department were conducting surveillance in the area of Mechanic Street. Police observed a vehicle idling on Mechanic Street near Rose Street with an unknown male in the driver’s seat. Detectives then observed a male subject (identified as 29 year old Talon Asquith) approach the vehicle and get into the passenger seat. Detectives observed the pair travel down Mechanic Street and drive a short distance before returning and pulling over in the same location where he had entered the vehicle. Due to a structure fire at an apartment building at 12 Schofield Avenue in Dudley this morning, the section of Schofield Avenue (Route 12) between Brandon Road and West Main Street was closed to traffic for several hours. Please avoid the area and seek an alternate route. The fire began around 2AM in the multi-family home. All residents were able to get out safely. Crews from Webster, Southbridge and other communities assisted in putting out the fire. There were no injuries reported and the cause is under investigation by the Dudley Fire Department.

The Auburn Police Department has announced they have been responding to 2 reports of counterfeit 100 dollar bills being passed around town at local businesses. Police say the bogus bills are high quality counterfeits and were designed to defeat the normal safeguards employed by most stores. The investigation is ongoing, but it is believed that the bills may have been passed by one or more black males in their 20’s from Brooklyn, New York. The Town of Webster has announced their newly-redesigned website will go live on February 5th. They say to please be patient in case the current website experiences some technical difficulties on February 4th or 5th while things are moved over. On Monday evening, just before 8PM, Connecticut State Police Troop D was dispatched to a motor vehicle accident on Route 395 northbound near Exit 35 in Plainfield. It was reported that a white dual wheel utility vehicle was traveling northbound on I-395 in the left lane passing another motorist when it suddenly turned right to get off Exit 35. That vehicle struck another vehicle causing it to lose control and hit the guardrail. The truck exited at exit 35 (Route 6 eastbound) and evaded the scene.
