Webster’s Recreation Department has announced a contest open to all residents who have Christmas lights on their home.  Don’t worry if you haven’t gotten them up yet, you still have time!  To nominate your display, or one that you love – simply send an email to recreation@webster-ma.gov or call (508) 949-3800 extention 1023. All nominations must be submitted by December 21st.  A group of 3 judges will visit all entries the next day. It’s free to enter, and the grand prize winner will get a free beach pass for 2018!

Matthew Gregoire (Facebook) 6:00AM FRIDAY UPDATE:  Fire crews from Oxford, Leicester, Millbury, Dudley, Webster, and Charlton spent most of the night battling a 3 alarm fire at 16 Sacarrappa Road in Oxford.  The fire broke out shortly before 8PM Thursday and quickly rose to a 2, then 3 alarm fire. We have learned 1 person who was previously unaccounted for has been found, but another person and 2 dogs died as a result of the fire. Firefighters were on the scene for several hours trying to extinguish the smoldering fire.  Crews had to fight the fire from the outside because conditions inside were too dangerous. North Brookfield Police are asking for help from the public after this woman went into the Cumberland Farms on North Main Street yesterday, distracted the cashier, and stole a Toys For Tots donation container and all the cash inside of it. On Friday, December 8th, as a result of an ongoing investigation into drug distribution in the area, Detectives and Officers from the Charlton Police Department, along with Task Force Officers from the South Worcester County Counter Crime and Drug Task Force, executed a search warrant for narcotics at 22 Harrington Road, apartment #26 in Charlton. Upon arriving at the residence, Officers knocked and announced their presence; however, individuals inside refused to answer.  Once entry was made, the target of the search warrant, Edwin Barreto, was searched and found to have approximately 6 grams of a white powdery substance consistent with cocaine. Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early, Jr. is investigating the suicide of a 15 year old student from Thompson, Connecticut.  Connor Tronerud died on December 4th “after struggling with bullying from peers” according to his obituary.  Connor lived in Sutton, but went to school at Marianapolis Prep in Thompson. It has not been made public where the alleged bullying took place, in Massachusetts or Connecticut, but at this time only Massachusetts State Police are investigating. On Twitter the school released a statement stating, “The Marianapolis community is grieving the loss of sophomore Connor Tronerud.  Connor will be greatly missed by the entire community.’’ A celebration of Connor’s life will be held at the Chapel at Marianapolis on…

New 911 Service Available to Webster & Dudley Residents

The South Worcester County Communications Center has announced a new service being offered to the residents in Webster and Dudley that will help to decrease the time to reach the local Communications Center during an emergency. Effective December 11, 2017, the South Worcester County Communications Center began receiving 911 calls directly from cellular devices.  Previously all 911 calls originating on cellular devices were routed through a statewide call center and then directed to the appropriate agency for dispatch. With the implementation this past year of the Next Generation 911 System, the ability to take cellular calls directly became a viable solution. This change will result in a decrease in time to reach the local communications…

On Thursday, December 7th, Uxbridge Police received a 911 call for an infant not breathing.  During the call officers were advised by dispatch that the mother and grandmother had left the residence and were driving to the fire department. Dispatch was able to obtain a vehicle description and relay that information to the officers. Moments later Officer Kyle Tripp intercepted the vehicle.  Officer Tripp ran to the vehicle and the the grandmother handed him the infant out the window.  He quickly sprang into action and began performing back thrusts to remove what was preventing breathing.  After several back thrusts, the infants airway was able to be cleared and Officers Tripp and William Ethier advised dispatch the…

The Sturbridge Police Department is investigating a report of a shoplifting incident that occurred on Sunday night at around 7PM at that town’s Walmart on Route 20 (Charlton Road). The female subject was caught on surveillance cameras leaving the store without paying for 2 robotic vacuum cleaners, valued at $392. During last night’s meeting, Selectmen in Dudley have announced a proposal that would assign a portion of Corbin Cemetery for use exclusively by veterans and their spouses. The idea was proposed by local residents and veterans Stephen Rogerson and Richard Majercik. Corbin Cemetery will allow the families of veterans a local option to visit their loved one’s graves without having to drive to a veteran’s cemetery out of town. To be eligible for one of these new cemetery plots, a veteran must be a Dudley resident at the time of death and the family must provide proof of an honorable discharge.  Spouses would able to be buried if they are married to the veteran at the…
