The Webster Water Department will be replacing a gate valve on Whitcomb Street on Wednesday, August 1st starting at 9 AM. This means that water service to all homes and businesses in the immediate area will be without running water for about 6 hours during the work. Affected streets include Lake Street from Eddy to Harris, including Stefaniak Avenue, West Avenue and Whitcomb Street from Lake Street to Cutler. Nearby streets should expect to experience discolored water during that time.  If you need to reach the water department, you may call (508) 949-3861.  You are asked not to call the Webster Police Department or 911, unless you are experiencing an emergency.

On Friday, July 27th at around 7:30PM, Southbridge Police was called to the parking lot at Big Y Supermarket located at 505 East Main Street to investigate the report of an armed robbery.  A caller told dispatch the three suspects were seen in a gold Chevy Malibu or Impala. On Sunday, July 29th around 1:45 am, members of the Dudley Police Department, The Central Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council SWAT Team and the Southern Worcester County Drug and Counter Crime Task Force, executed a search warrant at 10 Williams Street. Police officers were able to successfully seize approximately 90 grams of crack cocaine, over $3,000 in cash, and a loaded 9mm firearm. As a result of the investigation, 44 year old Shawn Gliniecki of Dudley was arrested and charged with trafficking in cocaine, conspiracy to violate the controlled substance act and possession of a dangerous weapon. The South Worcester Communications Center and Dudley Police Department report that the town is currently experiencing a widespread water outage in town.  As of 6AM on Sunday morning, July 29th, The water department has been called in and they are attempting to locate and fix the problem.  At this time they say that there is no time frame for a resolution.  Police Chief Steve Wojnar tells THE LAKE 940, “The Southeast portion of the community appears to be impacted directly.  Members of the Water and Sewer Department are aware of the problem and are actively searching for the source.”  He says that several calls have come in for low water pressure or no service, but…

Investigators from The National Weather Service have confirmed two early morning tornadoes touched down in the area on Thursday, July 26th.  Both storms were rated EF-1 on the Enhanced Fujita scale with estimated winds at about 100 miles per hour. One of the twisters stayed on the ground for approximately 4 miles beginning in Douglas, going through Uxbridge and fading out in Northbridge, while a second one popped up in Upton at around the same time. The strong winds damaged homes, brought down trees and power lines in several local towns.  There were no injuries reported. On Wednesday July 25th, just after 1PM, Douglas Police received a 911 call from a 15 year old girl stating that she was home alone and 2 men were attempting to break into her house.  While officers were on the way to the scene, the dispatcher stayed on the phone with the girl and she kept police informed of what was going on. Police say the men attempted to gain entry to the home through a back door using a pry bar.  The girl was advised by the dispatcher to lock herself in a room. On Tuesday July 24th, just after 6PM, Sutton Police stopped a 1994 Ford van on Putnam Hill Road for a motor vehicle violation and ended up finding more than they expected. Police say that during the investigation there was a strong odor of gas inside the vehicle.  A propane bottle connected to a portable burner was turned on inside the vehicle.  Police suspect the pair was actively processing powder cocaine into crack cocaine at the time of the stop. As a result of the traffic stop, Christopher and Jamie Coal of 22 Charles Street in Douglas were arrested for several drug offenses, including trafficking cocaine and manufacturing a class B substance. On Wednesday morning, July 25th just after 6AM, a Webster Police Cruiser driven by Officer Michael O’Leary collided with a telephone pole on Lake Street in the area of the intersection of Veteran’s Way and Lake Street. The cruiser was transporting an individual back to the police station at the time of the crash.  Deputy Chief Mike Shaw tells THE LAKE 940 that the passenger was in the back seat and wearing a seat belt. Neither the officer who was also wearing a seat belt, nor the passenger were injured.  The crash is currently under investigation.

On Monday, July 23rd at 7:45PM, Webster Police observed a car speeding on East Main Street.  During the traffic stop, the driver, identified as 27 year old Luis Vega from Southbridge was seen trying to throw a bag containing a powdery substance into the glove compartment. When officers investigated further they found two other larger baseball sized bags also containing a white powder believed to be cocaine. Vega was placed under arrest and was also found to be in the possession of $689. Police say the cocaine weighed at approximately 240 grams with a street value of $7500.
