On Friday afternoon, May 11th State Police pulled over a gray Ford Explorer travelling eastbound of Route 84 in Sturbridge. After a license plate check, the vehicle came back as reported stolen in New York last month.  Police pulled the car over near exit 2 in Sturbridge. As a result of an investigation and search of the vehicle over 1,000 grams of cocaine was found inside the car. Three occupants of the car, 34 year old Candice Elliot of Laurelton, New York, 26 year old Crystal Giles of Rocky Mount, North Carolina and 30 year old Carl Francois of Elmont, New York were placed under arrest and transported to the Sturbridge State Police Barracks. Fire crews from several communities are battling a fire at 39 Hudson Road in Oxford on Friday night.  Heavy smoke and flames could be seen shooting from the building when first responders arrived just before 7PM. Mutual aid from Webster, Dudley and Sutton were originally called to the scene as the fire was located in a non-hydrant district of the town.  According to Deputy Chief Jon Belanger, “three tankers in addition to the Oxford tanker truck shuttled water from a hydrant located on Depot Rd to the scene.” When the fire was brought to a second alarm additional mutual aid from Charlton , Leicester, Auburn, Millbury and Paxton were brought in. Auburn Police say an unoccupied school bus operated by A&A Transportation crashed into a telephone pole on Wednesday, May 9th. The crash, that was caught on surveillance cameras, happened moments after the driver exited the bus on Oxford Street.  The cause of the crash is currently under investigation.  No injuries were reported. In case you missed it, last week Leicester Police successfully tracked down a robbery suspect with his fingerprint left in Play-Doh at the scene.  The story was shared around the world, and today Leicester Police say “Thank You Hasbro (the maker of Play-Doh)” On May 9th, Leicester Police received a package from Hasbro filled with Play-Doh play sets along with a nice note recognizing the work that they put into the Play-Doh fingerprint case. The department says “The Play-Doh will be used to put similes on the faces of some children in our community.”

Sturbridge Police are searching for the 2 men in the photos above in relation to a credit card fraud case.  Police say the men purchased several personal hygiene items with a stolen credit card to see if the card would work.  Once it did, they returned to the Walmart on May 8th and purchased a 50 inch 4K television. In a post captioned “Hot Doggin’ it Down I-190,” the Massachusetts State Police shared photos of Trooper Nick D’Angelo and his new golden friend. Police say several motorists called to report a loose dog running down the middle of Route 190 in Worcester on Wednesday morning. When Trooper D’Angelo arrived, he found several motorists stopped attempting to capture the dog, to no avail.  State Police say, “Luckily for the wandering pup, (we later learned the dog’s name is Dozer) Trooper D’Angelo had brought some homemade deer jerky, and lured the dog to safety, who seemed very grateful for the morning snack!” The dogs owner was located by his dog tags and returned safely a short…

On Monday, May 7th Dr. Rene Hamel was recognized for his many years of dedicated service to the Bay Path School Committee. As an added gesture, The Bay Path Education Foundation has named this year’s Vocational Student Scholarship after Dr. Hamel. If you were around this area in the 1970s, you remember The Blizzard of ’78, but do you remember the snowstorm on this day one year earlier? Yes it is possible to snow this late into Spring, although it isn’t likely.  Meteorologist Mark Rosenthal shares this story and a few pictures from the storm 41 years ago.  He says, “a closed off area of low pressure gave us a lot of snow in the suburbs.”  About 6 or 7 inches fell in the Webster area on May 9, 1977.  Some sections of Worcester county saw as much as 20 inches.  The higher elevations saw the highest accumulations.
