THE LAKE 940 has learned a letter was sent home to parents of Webster Middle School students on Friday, March 9th to alert them of a situation that might have compromised security within the school. The letter referred to reports of an alleged social media post where “threatening comments” were made about the Webster Middle School and a staff member.  THE LAKE 940 reached out directly to Superintendent Ruthann Petruno-Goguen, who told us “After conducting an investigation the Webster Police and School Administrators determined the school was not at risk.” Ms. Goguen would like to remind all students of the importance of saying something when you see something that is not right. Oxford Police, Fire and EMS were on the scene of this serious accident on Joe Jenny Road on Saturday night.  This sport utility vehicle went off the road and crashed into this home.  Two  ambulances were dispatched to the home and transported occupants of the vehicle to local hospitals with injuries that do not appear to be life-threatening.  The Oxford building inspector was also called to the scene to investigate.  No word yet on what caused the crash.

Daylight Saving Time begins on Saturday night (or early Sunday morning) at 2AM.  This is where you set your clock ahead 1 hour, which means the mornings will be a little darker to start out with, but it will stay lighter longer into the afternoon. For example, sunrise on Saturday was 6:08AM and Sunset at 5:48PM.  On Sunday it will be 7:06AM and 6:49PM. At around 8:30 PM on Friday night, a 50 year old Charlton man was struck and killed by a car while he was attempting to cross Route 20 between the Gulf gas station and Ted’s Package Store. Charlton Fire Department personnel initially transported the man to Harrington Hospital in Southbridge, but was later flown to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester by their LifeFlight helicopter, where he was later pronounced dead. The woman driver, who was operating a Toyota sedan east on Route 20, stopped at the scene and is cooperating with the Charlton Police’s investigation. Leicester Police report than an alert neighbor reported a man, who appeared to be soliciting door to door, on Tuesday March 6th. Police say they had not issued any solicitor permits and the vehicle the neighbor reported as being involved had out of state plates which, police say, “made the incident more suspicious.” The vehicle was located and the operator was taken into custody and charged with being a fugitive from justice.” The man was wanted in Pennsylvania on a felony fraud charge related to a fraudulent home improvement incident.  It is clear that the man, who was taken into custody and his passenger were soliciting paving contracts.  This type of solicitation is suspect at…

Ludlow Police are searching for 17 year old Kaitlin Campbell who was reported missing on Wednesday, March 7th.  She was last seen leaving Ludlow High School at 11AM with her father that day, but she left home shortly after and has not been heard from since. Campbell was last seen wearing a Ludlow High School Volleyball jacket, sweatpants and blue crocs.  She is known to have relatives in other states and may no longer be in Massachusetts. Congratulations are in order for Officer John Nedoroscik who has been on the Webster Police force since 1991.  The Webster Police Department says that Nedoroscik provided the town with 28 years of service as a not only a police officer, but additional duties including patrol, a court liaison, and accident reconstructionist. Connecticut State Police have arrested a Thompson man on several charges, including violating a protective order. At 1:30AM on Tuesday morning, troopers clocked 20 year old Martin Taylor traveling at 109 miles per hour on Route 193 in Thompson.  The posted speed limit is only 30 miles per hour.  The driver was successfully pulled over on nearby Route 200 and taken into custody after failing a field sobriety test. Taylor is charged with speeding, stop sign violation, operating under the influence of drugs or alcohol, improper use of high beams and other charges.  He is scheduled to appear in Danielson Superior Court on March 20th

The latest winter storm has brought heavy wet snow to the area, and that has led to reports of low hanging power lines, trees down across roads and several thousands of homes without power. As of 10PM on Wednesday night there are at least 4,000 people from Sturbridge to Douglas in the dark, and nearly 10,000 people in the state without power.  We also have received a report of a tree down across Sutton Road in Webster. As of 8AM on Thursday morning 74 percent of the town of Oxford is without power.  The Oxford Library on Main Street has been designated as a warming center.
