The town of Webster Water Department has announced they will begin rehabilitating the water main located under Myrtle Avenue beginning on Monday, March 25th. The main, which was installed in 1908 between Park Street and First Street, will be taken off-line while it is mechanically cleaned and re-lined with a cured-in-place structural liner.  The water department says this liner will add approximately 60 years of life to the main. Once the liner is tested and cleaned, the water main and existing water services will be put back into service.  The rehabilitation project is expected to take about 3 months to complete. Just after midnight on Monday March 18th, Southbridge Police was dispatched to 28 Village Drive to investigate the report of a disturbance. When police arrived, they found 43 year old Nathan Lynch screaming in the hallway.  Police say when they tried to have a conversation with him, he became combative and assaulted a police officer. A struggle ensued during which time the man attempted to flee the building on foot.  During a chase, police say the suspect was trying to reach into his pocket to grab an unknown object.  Officers also watched him throw something to the ground. It was March 19th 2018, Alexandra Valoras passed away unexpectedly.  At the time, all that was known was that she was found on the side of the road along the Massachusetts Turnpike.  After an investigation it was determined she jumped off of the bridge to end her own life. Alexandra was a 17 year old straight-A engineering student scheduled to graduate from Blackstone Valley Regional Technical High School this summer.  Weeks earlier, her school’s robotics team had won a regional award. Just after 2:30AM on Sunday, March 17th, the Putnam Police Department observed what they say was suspicious activity in the area of Franklin and Wilkinson Streets.  The officer spotted a vehicle with a cancelled Rhode Island registration.  Once the vehicle was pulled over, the driver, 35 year old Justin Bell of Woodstock was found to be operating the vehicle, which did not belong to him, with a suspended license. Bell and his passenger contacted the vehicle’s owner, 33 year old Eric Bonin of Putnam, who arrived on foot a few moments later, according to police.  He was unable to provide proof of insurance of the vehicle, which had previously been registered in Foster, RI. A fast moving 3 alarm fire on Friday night destroyed the Chester P. Tuttle Post at 88 Bancroft Street in Auburn.  AuburnMassFire reports the blaze was first reported to the Auburn Emergency Communication Center just before 8PM on March 15th.  Crews arrived 4 minutes later to view heavy smoke coming from the roof. There were over 200 people in the building when the fire was reported.  The fire alarm was pulled and an orderly evacuation took place.  A 3rd alarm was called ten minutes later as firefighters had to leave the building due to deteriorating conditions.  Minutes later the roof of the building collapsed. On Saturday afternoon, just before 2PM, the Putnam Police Department became aware 2 unresponsive adults in a vehicle parked at Key Bank. Police say the operator of the vehicle, later identified as Michael Hiller of Ashford, CT, was passed out with what “appeared to be heroin/fentanyl on his chest.” During the investigation, the passenger regained consciousness first, followed by Hiller. Emergency crews were called to the scene as a precaution, and both occupants were removed from the vehicle. After a search of the car, police report finding 124 baggies of heroin, which tested positive for fentanyl, drug paraphernalia and $820 dollars in cash. Just before 2:30AM on Saturday, March 9th crews were called to a fire on Grafton Road in Millbury on the Worcester line.  The Millbury Fire Department says a second alarm was called right away due to the magnitude of fire.  Preliminary investigation shows the driver of a pickup truck lost control on Grafton Road and hit the home.  As a result of the crash, the natural gas service line to the home was cut, causing it to catch fire. Authorities say the gas feed fire under the truck was left burning for awhile to prevent an explosion until Eversource Gas crews could shut off service to the surrounding area. Connecticut State Police say a driver traveling in the wrong direction on Route 395 was killed in a head-on collision on early Friday morning, March 8th. The 54 year old man from Uxbridge was identified as Stephen Wild.  According to police, he was driving south in the northbound lanes of Route 395  when his vehicle crashed into a car traveling in the proper direction around 1AM.  The crash happened near Exit 32 (formerly exit 89). The driver and passenger of the second vehicle suffered minor injuries and were treated at a local hospital.  The highway was closed for almost 6 hours overnight, reopening around 7AM. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
