On the afternoon of Friday, May 4th, the Auburn Fire Department was called to the westbound side of the Mass Pike to put out a fire in a Honda CR-V that began when an occupant did not properly dispose of smoking materials. The fire department reminds you to be cognizant of disposing items properly with “dry season” in full swing. Groups of people could be seen evacuated outside as police were investigating inside on the morning of Friday May 4th. Dudley Police tell us a call was received at the Framingham State Police call center warning of a possible suspicious device. The building was evacuated and searched by emergency responders, court officials, and members of the Massachusetts State Police and Worcester Police Department Bomb Squads. Federal agents from the Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives were also on hand to assist. No suspicious devices were found and court resumed…

Traffic is still backed up all the way back to Oxford if you are heading northbound. Seek an alternate route if possible. Delays are expected through the early evening. While on site fire crews were also faced with a brush fire that was approximately 1,000 feet in length climbing the hill into the woods. Southbridge Police say “due to the increase in shoplifting in our community” they have partnered with retail businesses and have formed the Counter-Crime Shoplifting Initiative. At their first meeting in March they have decided on a “zero tolerance approach to dealing with the problem.” All people who are caught shoplifting in Southbridge will be arresting & prosecuted. Officers Gary Wood and Tim Smith were chosen as First Responders of the Year at the Central Massachusetts Emergency Medical System’s annual meeting. Thanks to the officers quick response and actions, a 46 year old man in cardiac arrest was successfully resuscitated and transported to the hospital earlier this winter.
