A routine traffic stop was anything but routine in Sutton this week. While officers were performing radar on Central Turnpike on Wednesday afternoon, Patrolman Bryan O’Rourke spotted a vehicle traveling over 60 mile per hour in a 35 mile per hour zone. The officer tried to pull the vehicle over, but it took off leading police on a short chase.  The driver of the vehicle left it on Purgatory Road and 3 men fled on foot. Other officers joined in on the search and found Isaiah Reels of Warren, RI who was arrested and charged with failure to stop for the police and several other motor vehicle offenses. It was one month ago, Douglas Police posted the photo of this dog that was found roaming the streets. Since then Animal Control Officer Kevin Sullivan has been caring for him and trying to find his owner.  Even though his photo has been shared hundreds of times, nobody has come forward to claim him. Now, the dog, who has been named “Douglas” is being placed up for adoption in the hopes of finding a forever home. Douglas is a 12 pound spaniel mix and approximately 2 years old.  He needs a home with no children and someone with a little bit of dog experience. The Leicester Police Department says road work will be taking place that will require detours. All Northbound traffic on Paxton Street (Rt. 56) will be detoured (right) on to Winslow Ave., (left) on to Hyland Ave., and then back on to Paxton Street (Rt. 56). NBC 10 Boston is reporting that the embattled Town Manager, Brian Palaia, who was caught drinking on the job, and had tried to prevent town employees from promoting a retirement party for retired Fire Chief Sheri Bemis, has tendered his resignation. According to Karen Hensel, the Board has accepted “resignation and severance package” and they will be changing the locks to city hall as soon as possible. Webster Police have made an arrest at Gilbert’s Market, located at 95 North Main Street, charging one person with indecent assault and battery. Deputy Chief Mike Shaw tells THE LAKE 940 that around 2:30 PM on Sunday April 15th, Webster Police responded to report of a sexual assault involving the clerk from Gilbert’s Market. Police investigated and found that the customer, an adult female, had gone into the store and purchased scratch off lottery tickets.  She went to her car and scratched them, revealing a cash prize.  She returned to the store to purchase more tickets with the winnings, and at that point told the clerk that it was her birthday. Oxford’s Town Manager, which NBC 10 Boston has reported was the subject of an emergency meeting last week, has put the kibosh on letting town employees promote a retirement party for former Oxford Fire Chief Sheri Bemis. Bemis, who was Massachusetts’ first full time female fire chief, retired earlier this year after serving the town of Oxford for over 30 years. Sutton Police have a Traffic Alert for drivers of Central Turnpike.  Whether you take Exit 7 off of Route 146 and head towards Oxford, or are traveling from Charlton or Oxford to get on to Route 146, you’ll need give yourself some extra time. On Tuesday, April 17th and Wednesday, April 18th lane restrictions will be in place in the area of Central Turnpike and Putnam Hill Road.  Police will be directing traffic as only one lane will be getting by from 7AM to 3PM both days. This is near the location where the new Sutton Police Department will be located, the site of the former Blue Jay Restaurant.

Route 20 in Charlton was shut down for a short while on the afternoon of Monday, April 16th after a vehicle traveling west crashed near City Power. The vehicle, traveling faster than the posted speed limit, hydroplaned and struck a telephone pole, then spun around and hit a large boulder.  The vehicle flipped on its side before coming to rest against an embankment. Power lines were brought down in the crash but there were no reports of lost power.  Nobody in the vehicle suffered any injuries.
