Charlton Home Fire Under Investigation

On Wednesday afternoon, May 8th at 1 PM, Charlton Fire Department responded to a home on fire at 124 Osgood Road. When crews arrived, they made entry to the structure and fought the flames with an aggressive interior attack.  The fire was deemed under control about an hour later. Mutual aid was brought in from Southbridge, Sturbridge, Auburn, and Spencer.   The cause of the fire is not yet known but is still under investigation by Charlton Fire Department and the District 7 Fire Investigation Unit. There were no injuries reported.  Estimated damage to the home is placed at $150,000.

On Wednesday afternoon, crews are on scene of a “large oil spill” reported on Route 56 in Oxford near where it crosses with Route 20. Oxford Police, Fire and EMS report that MassDOT and the Department of Environmental Protection have been called in to assist.  If you need to travel in that area you are asked to use extreme caution as the roads are slick at this time.

Polls closed at 8 PM on Monday, and the people of Webster have spoken.  Approximately 1400 residents turned out to elect Earl Gabor and Lisa Kontoes to the 2 open seats on the Webster Board of Selectmen. In this race, it was incumbents Mark Dowgiewicz and Bob Miller against newcomers Earl Gabor and Lisa Kontoes. The official tally was 994 votes for Kontoes, 658 votes for Gabor, followed by 509 for Miller and 393 for Dowgiewicz. A majority of voters we spoke to feel Webster is headed in the right direction under current Town Administrator Doug Willardson, however many were looking for new faces to bring fresh ideas to the board, believing the incumbents had…

Planet Fitness, with a location at 120 East Main Street in Webster, is offering teenagers age 15 to 18 to workout for free as part of their nationwide Teen Summer Challenge. The program was announced on Friday and will run from Wednesday, May 15th through Sunday, September 1st.  In addition to a free summertime gym membership, free fitness classes specifically for teenagers will also be available taught by certified fitness trainers. New research provided by the gym found 91 percent of teens want to stay active over the Summer because they believe exercise positively impacts mental health, and the ability to focus on schoolwork. On Saturday, April 27th the Dudley Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration conducted another prescription “Drug Take Back Day” event. For the 14th time in Dudley, the public had the opportunity to provide for safe disposal of expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs. The free and anonymous service was well attended in Dudley with over 50 people dropping off a large quantity of prescriptions.  Police say a total of 8 boxes were turned in for disposal. There were also 3 needle drop boxes for those needed to dispose of medical sharps.  This event was so successful another one is planned for later this Fall. On Saturday afternoon, crews from Oxford Fire-EMS were called to a car burning inside a garage at the Farrar Used Auto Parts located at 204 Main Street in Oxford. Crews were able to extinguish the fire which remains under investigation.  One person was transported to a local hospital by Webster EMS with non life threatening injuries. A tractor-trailer driver was trapped for 3 hours after his truck rolled down an embankment on the Massachusetts Turnpike. The driver, a 51 year old man from Bronx, NY, was traveling on Interstate 90 when his truck traveled off the right side of the road just after Exit 10A in Millbury. The crash occurred around 7AM on Saturday morning.  Crews from Millbury and Auburn’s Fire Department had to clear trees away before extricating him from the cab of the truck. He was then transported to a local hospital after sustaining serious, but not life-threatening injuries. The crash remains under investigation and no charges have been filed at this time.
