Spencer Police are investigating a fatal car crash that took place on Route 49 Friday night just after 9:30PM.  It is believed a 2012 Buick sedan travelling north on Route 49 drifted into the southbound lane and struck a 2012 Toyota truck head-on sending the truck off the road as it burst into flames. The driver of the truck and passenger of the car were taken to local hospitals with serious injuries.  The driver of the car, 25 year old Cole Victor of Spencer died at the scene. On Saturday, December 15th, many local police departments will be taking part in a “Goods For Guns” campaign.  Local residents with unwanted or unsafe firearms will be able to take them to a participating police station and trade them in for gift cards for local supermarkets. For each operable gun, you will receive $25 per rifle, $50 per pistol and $75 for automatic or semi-automatic weapons.  This program, sponsored in part by the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, is designed to prevent injury or death from guns in local homes. There has only been a few snowstorms so far this winter, but there are more likely on the way before spring. The Director of Public Works in Woonsocket, RI is looking to fill as many as 6 plow driver positions immediately. David D’Agostino tells WPRI-TV, “We are looking for CDL drivers, preferably with snowplow experience.”  You could either use your own truck, or use one of the city’s state-of-the-art snow removal vehicles. Just after 4AM on Monday, December 10th, Worcester Police were called to Cumberland Farms at 263 Grafton Street for a report of a person with a gun. The man, later identified as 40 year old Juan Lopez of Dudley, was allegedly showing off the gun to people and bragging that he did not need protection, according to police. Officers spotted a male who matched Lopez’s description on Grafton Street and he took off running when approached.  After a brief foot pursuit, the officers located him on Cutler Street with a black loaded handgun nearby.  Worcester Police say Lopez did not have a license to carry firearms. In a post on the department’s Facebook page, he writes, “I would like to inform the community that I will be retiring on January 12, 2019.  Thank you so much for your support throughout the years. Just after 2AM on Saturday, crews from the Webster Police and Fire Departments were called to a home on Birch Island Road with reports of smoke in the basement. Upon arrival, authorities spotted a fire on the porch and were able to quickly extinguish it.  After further investigation, firefighters believe a spotlight being used to illuminate Christmas decorations may have fallen onto the deck and ignited it. The fire department posted a reminder on Facebook to, “please take the time to make sure lights that produce a large amount of heat are not near anything combustible.” They also suggest trying to find a safer light to use. Sturbridge Police have announced the arrest of a 28 year old Burlington man after a traffic stop on Route 15. Officers, with help from Southbridge Police Detectives and the Massachusetts State Police, seized over 500 bags of heroin on Friday. Dudley Police and Fire Departments along with the State Fire Marshal’s office and the office of the Worcester County District Attorney are investigating a series of fires that broke out this morning. One person was killed after a vehicle, shed and home all went up in flames.  Crews were dispatched to 48 Dudley-Oxford Road just after 7 this morning. The person who died has not been identified, but is believed to have been involved with starting the fires according to the fire marshal’s office. State Police Detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the death of a teenage boy whose body was found at the scene of a fire on Saturday night. The smoky fire began in the living room of the home at 26 Stone Road in Millbury shortly after 9PM.  The body of the boy who lived in the home was found in the rubble of the room. Three other residents of the home escaped the fire, although one resident did sustain burns to his face and arms while trying to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher.
