When it’s time to “un-deck” the halls and get rid of that old, dried out Christmas tree, you will have a few options. The town of Webster has announced that residents may drop off their unwanted Christmas trees at the Public Works Department’s compost located at 23 Cudworth Road.  Hours of operation are  7:30AM to 2:30PM, Monday through Friday, from now until January 11th, 2019.  For more information call (508) 949-3861. Residents of Oxford may drop off their unwanted Christmas trees at the DPW Garage located at 34 Charlton Street on Saturday, January 5th and January 12th from 8AM to 3PM. UPDATE:  The Massachusetts State Police say technical issues with the 9-1-1 system, and the resulting wireless capability outages, have been resolved. Massachusetts callers may resume using 911 from their cell phones for public safety emergencies.   If you have an emergency, dialing 9-1-1 from your cell phone may not go through, according to Massachusetts State Police. A nationwide outage affecting CenturyLink, an Internet communications company, is impacting wireless 9-1-1 calls across the country.  It may be necessary to use the full 10-digit number of a local police or fire department in the event of an emergency. On the day before Christmas Eve, police in Sutton were keeping busy by arresting one of the holiday’s well known villains. Sunday afternoon on Facebook, the Sutton Fire Department posted photos and a thank you to the Sutton Police Department for keeping Christmas safe.  The Grinch who stole Christmas was in custody in the back of a cruiser. With just 3 days until Christmas, The Robbins Family, from Robbins Garden Center on Sutton Avenue in Oxford is donating their remaining Christmas trees, wreathes, hanging baskets and kissing balls to those who may not have been able to get a tree yet this year. For those who can afford it, a monetary donation may be left to benefit the Oxford Food Shelf. Just after 2:30 on Friday afternoon, crews from Millbury’s Fire Department were dispatched to the PetSmart store in the Shoppes At Blackstone Valley. By the time the fire department got to the scene, smoke had filled the rear of the store and a wall that had been on fire was extinguished by an employee.  The fire is believed to have started in an electrical outlet near the Banfield Pet Hospital inside the store. Employees of the store were able to call 911 and successfully evacuate all customers and pets from the building.  The fire department says the Banfield section of the store will open but in a reduced form while they clean up and wait…

Less than 2 weeks after Chief Timothy Bent of the Webster Police Department announced his retirement date, we now know who his successor will be. In what is being called “an unprecedented, strong move for the Town and Police Department, Town Administrator Willardson has promoted a new Command Staff.” Deputy Chief Mike Shaw, who has been with the Webster Police Department since 1997, has been appointed to the Chief’s position.  This leaves leaving Lieutenant Tobby Wheeler being promoted as the new Deputy Chief, and Gordon Wentworth Jr. has been named the department’s new Lieutenant.  These 3 promotions will take effect on January 13th, 2019, the morning after Chief Bent’s retirement becomes official.. The Massachusetts State Lottery has announced a Powerball Ticket sold at Mac’s Convenience Store located at 77 East Main Street in Webster was a $100,000 winner in Wednesday night’s drawing. Those winning numbers were: 15  29  31  37  43 and the Powerball number was 16. Nobody successfully matched all of the numbers, so Saturday’s estimated jackpot is $281 million dollars. The Dudley Police Department has announced the winner of their 10th annual holiday greeting card contest.  All fourth graders from Dudley Elementary School were given the opportunity to submit a drawing which would be used as the cover photo of the holiday card sent out by the Dudley Police Department this year. On Friday, December 14, the TD Bank located on Route 131 in Sturbridge was robbed.  Police say the male suspect entered the bank and demanded money from a teller.  An undisclosed amount of cash was taken as the suspect fled on foot.  After an hours-long search, Sturbridge Police, with help from Massachusetts State Police, Southbridge Police and a canine unit were unable to locate the man. An active investigation ensued and continued throughout the weekend. As a result of that investigation a suspect was identified. The Sturbridge Police applied for an arrest warrant and a search warrant. Both warrants were obtained and executed by members of the Sturbridge Police and the Central Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council…

At around 2:30AM crews were called to 56 Chase Avenue in Webster for a fire that quickly escalated to a 3 alarm blaze. No injuries were reported and at least 6 residents were displaced as a result of the fire. Brenda Waleski, who lived on the second floor told Boston 25 News she heard a popping noise and smelled smoke.  She woke up the family on the first floor, including a couple and a baby, and evacuated the building with her children. Mutual aid from from Douglas, Dudley, Charlton, Oxford, Southbridge, Sutton and Quinebaug also helped get the fire under control.
