Beginning today, the town of Oxford has launched the Oxford Fire and Emergency Services “Address Indicator” program as part of their Community Risk Reduction program. The Address Indicator program provides a highly visible, reflective street number sign to households in the community. “I am excited to announce the launch of this new program to assist first responders in locating you and your loved ones’ homes in the event of an emergency,” said Fire Chief Laurent McDonald. “This program is used in communities throughout the country to support public safety efforts and I am pleased to be able to offer it to Oxford as I did in my previous community of Monson.” Through this program, residents…

THE LAKE 940 has learned of a head-on collision with multiple injuries involved on West Main Street in Dudley in the area of the courthouse. Several 911 calls were made around 7:20 PM on Wednesday, June 16th.  West Main Street was closed for a time while crews worked to clear the scene. The Dudley Fire Department says that the occupants of both vehicles were able to exit the vehicles on their own before the arrival of first responders. A total of 4 people were injured and transported to local hospitals. As of 11 PM on Wednesday, West Main Street has been re-opened. More photos from the crash and fire are below.

Firefighters from around the area were dispatched to a burning structure on Route 169 in Woodstock. The blaze began in the overnight hours of Tuesday, June 15th.  The 300-year-old, 3-story farmhouse was severely damaged.  Due to the lack of fire hydrants in the area, water had to be trucked in from Dudley. Four people were transported to local hospitals for smoke inhalation and burns and are expected to survive.  Four dogs perished in the fire. First responders from Dudley were dispatched to the Park ‘N Shop Plaza on Airport Road in Dudley for reports of a stuck truck that had crashed. Around 3:30 PM on Monday, June 14th, crews found a truck that had mistakenly run over a handicapped parking bollard leaving the truck partially airborne.  The driver of the vehicle was not injured.  The vehicle did not appear to be damaged.  It was removed by a tow truck and the was able to able to be driven away.

The Town of Webster and the Webster Lake Association have announced there will be no boating or swimming allowed on Webster Lake on Wednesday, June 16th.  The annual treatment of weeds is scheduled for that day.  The beach, the walking tracks, dog park, and Lakeside boat ramp will all be closed. A full map of the treatment areas can be found here.  It is recommended not to use the water for drinking, cooking, or irrigation until Tuesday, June 22nd.  Swimming and other water contact may safely resume on Thursday, June 17th. Dudley Police Chief Steve Wojnar has sent us this traffic alert: (Effective Monday, June 14th) A recent bridge inspection was conducted in the Town of Dudley by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (Mass DOT).  The Town of Dudley Highway Department was notified on or about May 28th of structural issues with one of the bridges spanning the French River on Brandon Road.  (See Attached Notice) For safety purposes, Mass DOT has ordered Brandon Road in Dudley closed until further notice.  Town officials are working with Mass DOT, Senator Fattman and Representative Durant, as well as officials from the Town of Webster, to expedite the repair and re-opening of this roadway as soon as possible.  In…

Earlier this week Southbridge Police responded to a report of a shooting on Mechanic Street.  Several 911 calls were placed on Monday, June 7 at around 6:45 PM.  According to a press release from Police Chief Shane Woodson, “officers observed a male subject bleeding profusely from the abdomen/chest area with an obvious gunshot wound.” The first responding officers were able to administer life-saving medical treatment to the victim until paramedics from the Southbridge Fire Department arrived a few minutes later.  The victim was transported to UMass Medical Center in Worcester and is expected to survive.
