Would you pack up and leave Webster, Dudley, Oxford, Southbridge, Thompson or Putnam if it meant making some extra money, or at least getting a tax break? You’d only have to cross the line to Burrillville, Glocester or Woonsocket.
The State of Rhode Island is looking for a little help, as they are less than 1,000 residents away from losing one of their 2 seats in the United States House of Representatives by 2022.
All eyes are on the 2020 Census to make sure all residents of the Ocean State take part, and mark down their residency. With fears of losing a congressional seat, a state representative has created a bill to try to get more people to move to RI.
Representative Carlos Tobon of Pawtucket has created the Qualified Family Migration to Rhode Island Act that would pay middle class families up to $10,000 in tax credits or incentive payments to become residents of Rhode Island for a year.
A “middle-class family” is defined as a married couple with at least one child or a single person with at least two children and in which the combined household gross income is in excess of $100,000 per year.
If the incentive program is approved, it would begin on July 1st, 2018, and end Dec. 31st, 2020 and would be limited to 30,000 qualified applicants.
