Native archaeology comes to Dudley Grange
DUDLEY – Canoes in our area are a dime a dozen. But almost none of them are centuries old.
Just as the current century began, the local Nipmucs discovered a well-preserved ancient dugout canoe at the bottom of Lake Quinsigamond, and two more nearby. Called mishoonash (plural of mishoon), the boats opened doors to a new avenue of Native American history and have become state-protected sites.
Project Mishoon’s Cheryl Stedtler will talk about the discovery and its implications at Dudley Grange, 139 Center Road, Dudley, on Tuesday, Nov 8 at 7 PM. It’s free and open to the public. Come up the hill after you’ve voted in this year’s important midterm elections to explore a new aspect of American history.
Also, if you have spare, good condition hats, mittens, gloves, earmuffs, scarves and the like, Grange is collecting for a Warming Tree. Sometime around Christmas, whatever’s collected will be donated to New Hope to help victims of domestic violence
