Working People’s Day of Action Worcester

Over 250 Massachusetts workers, community leaders and elected officials rallied at Worcester City Hall on Monday, joining the nationwide Working People’s Day of Action.

The event was one of 10 in Massachusetts and over 300 nationwide, it coincided with the first day of oral arguments in the Supreme Court case, Janus vs. AFSCME.

Speakers addressing the crowd included a high school teacher, a firefighter, a social worker, a park ranger and a medical billing associate.

The Working People’s Day of Action also coincided with the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr. joining striking sanitation workers in Tennessee as they fought for the freedom to join together in a union for dignity and respect on the job.

At the rally, participants called on the Supreme Court to uphold the freedom to form strong unions and asked that it be protected as a sacred American right.

Secretary of State William Galvin addressed the crowd by saying, “When you hurt unionized teachers you hurt the students they serve, because they don’t just negotiate over wages, they negotiate over class sizes.”

Senate President Harriette Chandler (pictured above) also addressed the crowd and mentioned that unions strengthen our communities and public sector workers can deliver high quality services that the public depends on.  “By joining together in unions you’ve shown you’re stronger together.”
