On Wednesday, March 14th just before 5PM, members of the Worcester Police Gang Unit were patrolling the Grafton Hill area of the city.

The officers observed a male that they were familiar with as being in a local gang, identified as 18 year old Edward Gale.

Gale walked passed the officers who were sitting in an unmarked police cruiser.  The suspect was clinging to something heavy in the front of his waistband.  The officers became suspicious of Gale’s actions and mannerisms and decided to follow him.

Gale immediately ran off as the plain clothes officers exited their vehicle.  Officers began to chase after the suspect and noticed that he pulled out a handgun from his front waistband and tossed it into a snow bank.  Officers were able to him a short time later.

As officers tried to place him into handcuffs, Gale resisted arrest and spit into the face of one of the officers.  Officers were able to locate the tossed firearm and found a loaded .22 caliber Smith and Wesson handgun.

Gale was charged with assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, possession of a large capacity firearm, disturbing the peace,  and other gun related charges.  He was arraigned Thursday in Worcester County District Court.
