Boston’s Bozo The Clown, Frank Avruch Has Died

Even if you didn’t grow up in this area, you’ll probably remember seeing Frank Avruch on television in the ’60s and ’70s. You may not have known his name, but you knew who he was. Boston’s own Bozo The Clown worked at Channel 5 (WCVB-TV) for more than 40 years.
In an online interview Avruch once said, “A lot of people when they talk to me now, they are sort of hesitant to bring it up. How could this suave, somewhat sophisticated man be this guy with red-orange hair and big shoes? And I said, that is one of the highlights of my career.” he said.
Long before cable TV came along, Frank Avruch became television’s first nationally-syndicated Bozo The Clown. From New York to Los Angeles, Frank could be seen on TV sets with his pals Professor Tweedy Foofer, Mr. Lion, Kookie The Kangaroo, Grandma Nellie, Zany Zebra and Klank The Tin Can Man.
Avruch died at his Boston home on Wednesday at the age of 89.
