The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles will temporarily close all branches on Friday, March 23rd and re-open on Monday March 26th while they upgrade to a new computer system.

Online services will also be unavailable from 7 PM on Thursday, March 22nd, until 8 AM Monday, March 26.  There will be no motor vehicle inspections, in-person services at registry and AAA locations during this time.

The new computer system will replace the current one, which has been in place for over 30 years.  It will also allow the registry to issue the new federally mandated REAL ID, which will allow some residents to use a driver’s license as federal identification.

Massachusetts is expected to start offering the new licenses on March 26th, but the RMV says there is no need to renew your license earlier than its current expiration date.

To obtain the new REAL ID license or identification card, applicants will be required to prove U.S. citizenship or that they have a lawful presence in the United States.  Most states are expected to only issue REAL ID cards by October of 2022.
